What It Really Costs to Own an EV Today, and Why How You Drive Decides the Total

Two neighbors buy the same range-extended electric truck. One commutes twenty miles and plugs in nightly; the other tows a trailer all day. A year later their running costs look nothing alike, and the reason is simple: home-charged electric miles cost less than half what gasoline does, so how you drive quietly writes your ownership bill.

Which Costs Fall the Moment You Plug In?

The two bills that shrink first are maintenance and fuel. Consumer Reports' analysis of maintenance and repair spending found electric drivers pay about half what gas owners do over a car's life, roughly three cents a mile against six, because there is no oil to change, no exhaust to corrode, and far fewer moving parts to fail. A BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) leans hardest on that math: with no engine, transmission, or fuel system to service, its upkeep list is the shortest of any car on the road.

Energy is the other line that drops. AAA's latest driving-cost analysis pegs gasoline near thirteen cents a mile, while charging at home on a residential rate costs under half that for a typical electric car, and less still on an overnight plan. One buyer banks that saving without a plug: a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) takes its reward straight from the pump, squeezing more miles from every gallon while never needing a charger or a change to the driveway.

Where Does an EV Cost You More Than a Gas Car?

Two costs push the other way, and the first lands on the insurance quote. An Insurify study released in June 2026 found electric cars cost about 42 percent more to insure than gas models across all model years, a gap driven by pricier battery packs and costlier repairs. The better news is that the penalty is shrinking fast: for 2024-and-newer vehicles the difference narrows to roughly 18 percent, and newer electric cars saw premiums fall more than 11 percent in a single year.

The larger swing is depreciation, which is why a car that is cheaper to run is not always cheaper to own. AAA's figures show that once you fold in how fast a vehicle sheds value, an electric car's lower fuel and service bills can be swallowed whole, leaving its yearly cost near or above a comparable gas model. Sticker price bends the same way for the plug-in buyer: a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) asks a premium up front for two complete drivetrains, and only a driver who plugs in night after night turns that extra cost into real savings.

So Does a Range-Extended Truck Run Like an EV or a Gas Truck?

For the newest electrified body style, the answer is both, and the work you give it decides which one wins. The wheels of an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) are turned by an electric motor alone; its gasoline engine is tied to a generator that recharges the battery, with no mechanical path to the wheels. The first mainstream example, a full-size pickup arriving for 2026, pairs a 92-kilowatt-hour pack good for about 149 electric miles with a 3.6-liter V6 that only feeds the generator, a 27-gallon tank, and a 14,000-pound tow rating. Drive it light, on a short commute with a nightly plug, and it behaves like a battery truck, its electric miles as cheap as any home-charged car's.

Hitch up a heavy trailer, though, and the math flips. Towing empties that battery quickly, the V6 wakes to keep the pack fed, and the truck begins drinking from its tank at gas-truck rates, so a daily hauler and a pure commuter can own the identical truck and post wildly different fuel bills. This truck also carries the fullest maintenance profile of the four, since it keeps a real gasoline engine to service on schedule on top of all its electric hardware, though that engine runs only when it is called. And because the category is barely on sale, no one yet knows how these trucks hold their value over a decade of that duty, the one cost no spreadsheet can fill in today.

The honest way to read all of this is to match the car to how you actually drive, because no single powertrain is cheapest for everyone. With a home plug and an ordinary daily commute, a battery car's low running costs pay you back year after year, and a hybrid does the same for anyone who cannot plug in at all. Tow only now and then, and the range-extended truck runs on cheap electric miles most weeks while never stranding you on a long haul; tow every day, and you are mostly buying a gas truck with a plug. Drive few miles or lean on resale, and a lower price with gentler depreciation can outweigh any fuel saving. The cheapest electrified vehicle to own is never a trim on a spec sheet. It is the one whose costs fit the way you drive.
