How Long Your EV Battery Really Lasts, and Which Powertrain Wears Its Pack Hardest

Plenty of shoppers still picture an electric car's battery like a phone's: strong for a few years, then half dead and facing a five-figure replacement. Fleet data now says the opposite. Across hundreds of thousands of cars, the battery is turning out to be the part most likely to outlast the vehicle wrapped around it.

How Long the Battery Really Holds Up

The numbers behind that claim come from watching real cars age. Recurrent, which has tracked more than a billion miles of driving across tens of thousands of vehicles, finds the typical electric car still holding about 97 percent of its original range after three years and roughly 95 percent after five. Full battery failures are rarer still, showing up in only about three of every thousand modern cars. Geotab's 2025 study, drawn from more than 22,700 vehicles across 21 models, tells the same story: the average pack keeps close to 82 percent of its capacity after eight years.

Why so slow? A large pack is what protects a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) from the wear people fear, because the daily commute draws only a shallow sip from a deep reservoir, and a battery that is rarely pushed to empty or stuffed to full ages gently.

The Pack That Works the Hardest

One powertrain is the exception, and it asks the most of its owner over the long haul. A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) carries a small battery, usually somewhere between 8 and 20 kilowatt-hours, and it works that battery harder than anything else on the road. A driver who empties most of the electric range each day and charges it back each night runs the pack through a near-complete cycle daily, while a big electric car covering the same miles barely dips into its reserve. The German auto club ADAC, working with the battery-testing firm Aviloo, measured this across roughly 28,000 plug-in hybrids: a typical pack held about 92 percent of its capacity at 31,000 miles, 88 percent at 62,000, and near 80 percent by 124,000, a faster slide in percentage terms than a full electric car shows.

That is why the plug-in hybrid comes with the fullest upkeep list of any electrified car. It still has a complete gasoline engine to service on schedule, and it has the hardest-working battery of the four to keep an eye on. The saving grace is that the two systems back each other up: as the pack ages, the driver loses electric miles, not the car, because the engine is always there to carry the rest. Even these hardest-used packs stay well above the level where they stop doing their job.

The Habits That Wear a Battery Down, and the Warranty Behind It

What separates a pack that ages gracefully from one that does not is mostly how it is charged. Geotab found that cars relying only occasionally on high-power DC fast charging lost about 1.5 percent of capacity a year, while those leaning on it hard, fast charging most of the time at the highest speeds, lost around 3 percent and were on track to keep only about three-quarters of their capacity after eight years, against nearly 90 percent for the gentle chargers. Heat is the other quiet tax: batteries in hot climates give up a little more each year than those living in mild weather. Charging at home overnight at a slower rate, and saving fast charging for road trips, is exactly the habit that keeps a pack healthy.

If wear ever does cross the line, a federal warranty stands behind the battery for at least eight years or 100,000 miles, and it carries over to whoever owns the car next, with California and the states following its lead requiring ten years or 150,000 miles. Track records help too. The HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) owns the longest real-world history of any electrified car, its small battery routinely running past 200,000 miles without drama. The newest body style needs the same battery care as any electric car: an E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) carries a full-size pack that ages by the same rules, with an onboard generator that hides much of any electric range the years quietly take.

So the real question for anyone shopping used is not whether the battery will last. It is how much life is left in the specific pack in front of you. Ask the seller for a state-of-health reading, the single number that says what percentage of the original capacity remains, and do not settle for a reassuring glance at the dashboard. Get it in writing from an independent battery report or a diagnostic scan, and confirm how many years and miles of the original warranty still travel with the car. A pack's age in years matters far less than how it was charged and how hard it was worked, and that number, not the odometer, tells you what you are really buying.
